The story is in the year 2020 and instead of humans fighting in the ring we let robots do all the bashing for us. Hugh Jackman plays a down-on-his-luck, ex- boxer who now trains robot boxers for small venue fighting. He discovers he has a son from a deceased lover. His kid (Max, played by Dakota Goyo) is a shamelessly cute, cynical moppet who carefully rides the fine line between smart-alecky brat and wise-beyond-his-years. The central plot is about the estranged pair reconciling over their mutual love of robot boxing and a particular robot; a washed up, rusted out, Rocky-esque junker named "Atom" who is in every way the underdog, but despite his size he can take a beating.

There is a love interest for Jackman, a lovely female mechanic (Evangeline Lily) who is always in Jackman's corner... kind of a thankless 'cheerleader' for the boys. The special effects are mind blowing, and the robot fighting matches are epic. This film grabs you, and pulls you into its world that when you see Atom beat the snot out of another robot, you’re going to be jumping up and down from your seat shouting "YEAH" Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo do an awesome job playing in the whole father and son relationship role and Goyo is a delight to watch. I laughed at just about every punch line he delivered (most at the expense of Jackman's character).
