A Cool Movie That is a Bit Too Long
Alex - wrote on 01/08/12

A unique movie that gets an extra half star due to the risk and execution. At times, though, it was boring and just too long (but only 1:40) for today's audience.

The Story: The weakest link to this film relies in its plot. If you recall, many movies have been made about Hollywood's failed silent film stars and their struggles. While this one seems unique, it is not based on any individual star and does not contain the level of detail and drama that I wish for. It is a silent movie and even silent movie directors would have passed on this movie to make. There isn't enough drama.

Style/Cinematography: Outstanding. I felt like I was whisked back to the 1920s, watching the premier of a Buster Keaton or Charlie Chapman movie. The begging was so perfect and so engrossing. It was amazing. Once the credits rolled through and the initial feeling wore off, I had to actually pay attention to the story, which kind of sucked. But, each shot, and each angle was just like a silent film. It was constructed as if it was an authentic silent movie that was just discovered. Amazing in these regard and should win all creative awards including....

The Musical Score: Again, almost perfect. This coupled withe the cinematography really brought the movie together. Dramatic scenes were displayed perfectly with the music. Happy scenes carried happy music. Without the music, the movie would be nothing.

The Acting: The two main stars were fantastic. It was as if they were made for silent movies (and I believe they are french actors). They looked the part, acted the part and did everything you would expect. There was no over acting or over dramatizing that one could notice. Right on cue and down right perfect.

Compared to Others: Other silent movies are better. Watch all of the famous ones before this and then you'll see what I mean. But, this movie adds a risk that no one has been willing to take for many years (not sure how long as I am not a movie history expert). It succeeds on almost all levels. Extremely smart, funny at times and just what you want most of the time. I would see it if you are like me and want something different. This may meet your expectations but just fell short of mine.
