High Rise blends psychological suspense with social commentary in this claustrophobic and unnerving thriller. While it does become rather intense or downright dark at times, there remains a sardonic sense of humor. The cast is excellent. The direction while confident does not make the plot understandable though at times and the editing is chaotic.

An obvious allegory for unfair class systems in government. Beyond that, any real messages or meanings are lost amidst the frenetic storytelling. This plot-less free-flowing endeavor is a mix of striking visuals and random character changes that adds up to one slightly cohesive mess (if that's possible). I was entertained by the bizarre nature of everything present, but nothing ever rose above that level for me. I appreciate the ambition.

"High Rise" by Yojimbo

A doctor moves into a hi-tec apartment building but when the flaws in its systems become more and more apparent its inhabitants succumb to anarchy and violence. The premise of the High Rise as an analogy for modern society is so ham-fisted as to be almost laughably naive; the architect "Royal" lives at the top, while the entitled upper floors indulge in hedonism and pointless excess, looking down on the sycophantic middle who look down on the lower floors as an unnecessary, over-populated burden. The one agitator rails against the literal lack of power in the lower floors and the educated liberal refuses to get his hands dirty, preferring to judge and commentate while their lives descend into ugly violence and murder. The lack of subtlety is reined in somewhat by an extremely da...
