Having seen the stage version, the film can't quite capture the same magic. I do applaud Chris Columbus on his decision to cast the original actors in their roles - they work together well. The music is still great and the story is too.

Good Movie, Better On Stage

As much as I like the movie Rent, it's safe to say that the staged performance is even better and captures the magic that the movie should have.

The story is very well put together and follows the lives of people living in the poorest part of New York, trying to get by writing music and making low budget movies. Most of the characters have AIDS, and some have drug problems, which makes for good drama between characters. At the same time, the story progresses wonderfully with drug obsession, AIDS issues, and past experiences from characters. Misunderstands between characters happen all of the time, which makes the drama rise several times during the movie.

The character interaction in the film is great. The characters themselves are very realistic and they're able to hold conversatio...

Give In To Love, Or Live In Fear

"Rent" was truly better live [I've seen it twice, yeah, no big deal], but this film version manages to capture the omnipresence of love that is felt when seen live. Jonathan Larson wrote this play as an homage to "La Boheme" and died the night before it opened. However, the point of this film is that there is love all around us, we just have to find it. A truly inspiring film, and shame on all of you people who walked out of this movie. Get over yourselves!!!

Rent

This was quite good for a musical. So, I can't really get to excited over movies when out of nowhere people just break into sing and dance randomly, but this was quite enjoyable. I think that when that drag queen died, they could have made it a bit sadder and more dramatic, but oh well. A great movie if you love musicals.

"Rent" may become a good rental

Based on the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-wining originally off-Broadway Rock Opera of the same name by the late Jonathan Larson, who died the night before the play was set to debut, the story revolves around eight friends from the East Village, New York City, New York during 1989 as the AIDS epidemic hit the world hard. In fact, most of the characters are HIV-positive, due to a number of reasons which include homosexuality and drug abuse. We follow the eight main characters through falling in love to AIDS hitting close-to-home, to death during the '89 calendar year.

The cast, which consists mostly of members from the original 1996 stage play, is pretty good, and yet spectacular vocally. Each were comfortable in their roles, including those who have never appeared in the stage versio...
