Plot Outline:

In 1940s L.A., the "hat squad" is a special task force, not above stretching the law, in order to bring down the criminal elements of the city. When a young woman is found murdered, they uncover a plot linking her to several prominent individuals, including an Army general working for the powerful, new Atomic Energy Commission. But the closer they get to the truth, the harder it becomes to uncover it. -- Chris Kavan

An attempt to revisit hard-boiled noir detective movies that pre-dated LA Confidential by a year, but this is all style and no substance. All the elements are there, but it just feels like a half-hearted pastiche of ideas pilfered from other sources and the ensemble cast of pseudo-untouchables are largely unused and frankly come across as a bunch of unsympathetic thugs. There's little character development and no depth to the plot but having said that, I didn't hate it, mainly because of the presence of Nick Nolte and Jennifer Connelly. But there are much better examples of the genre out there.

Mulholland Falls....trips over the clif.

Compared to most neo-noirs these days that adopt a dark palette, the splashy colors and bright cinematography is much appreciated. But it tries to balance this out with a needlessly gloomy plot about infidelity, police brutality, and Cold War espionage. The attempt at making a philosophical point at the end actually renders the whole mystery pointless (to quote Nick Nolte's character: "She died for nothing, ya son of a bitch!"). That said, some of the cast works. Nick Nolte is the head cop with a murky set of principles; his lovable pal is played by Palminteri; Treat Williams is an overzealous army officer; and the standout performance is Jennifer Connelly as your standard 'hooker with a heart of gold'. On screen presence alone, she has never done better since. I cannot figure ...
