A pretty good take on the serial killer story with standout performances from Costner and Hurt. Even Demi Moore was decent here. Some twists where good, others not so much, but overall it was well done.

"Mr. Brooks" by Yojimbo

Successful business and family man Earl Brooks issecretly a serial killer whose meticulous planning is unravelled when a witness photographs him at the scene of his latest murder. My first reaction to the synopsis of this film was "Just what the world needs. Another serial killer movie..." but I have to say that the novel approach of this film had me hooked from the start. Costner plays Brooks not as a gleeful killer, but a victim of an unwanted addiction which is personified on screen by William Hurt; a kind of Tyler Durden for psychopaths. It sounds gimmicky but the great performances really make it work and Hurt and Costner have really good on screen chemistry, as the killer argues and jokes with "himself". Far less interesting, unsurprisingly, is Demi Moore and it is difficult to care...

A train-wreck of a movie! I don't even know where to begin. One-dimensional characters run amok, a manipulative storyline that tries to be bold but utterly fails, and an extremely slow pacing are some of the few characteristics of this disaster. There wasn't a single second of the film when I believed that characters' motivations and ways of thinking. On the other hand, maybe this picture is too planned, too calculated to the point where it ended up as a complete mess due to its unmanageable gravity. I wish the filmmakers made the story as simple as possible and have gone to the slasher direction. With its bumbling characters and supposed shockers, one can say that it tried to be the next "The Silence of the Lambs" which serves as a character study of a serial killer. Avoid this one if yo...
