This is infamous as the film that made the great Sean Connery retire from acting. It's a mess of a movie - high concept, but poorly executed. Instead of fully-fleshed awesome throwbacks to known story characters, we get thin caricatures that bounce through grandiose action scene after grandiose action scene. Too much going on, not enough story. |

This could've been so much more. Full of special effects and action, but completely devoid of any fun. Big failure. |

Most likely, the worst action/adventure film ever made, this film made me vomit with disgust. Shane West, Sean Connnery, Stuart Townshend...WHO CAST THIS MOVIE!? Stephen Norrington's direction is both stilted and confused, with an action feel at one end and at another he attempts to be a giant of special effects. A terrible quotient in the mathematics of cinema...Skip it. |

"The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" by Yojimbo |
|
The British government engage the services of a group of adventurers each with their own special powers to foil a plot to cause a world war. Yet another effects laden blockbuster based on a graphic novel, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a little different because of its roots in classic literature. Each character is based on those featured in the works of Jules Verne, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde and the like and does so with varying success. Connery's Alan Quartermain is a fun cross between Henry Jones Junior and Senior, Townsend's Dorian Gray is dashingly amoral and Captain Nemo is reinvented as a martial artist in command of some spectacularly designed art deco retro technology. Mr Hyde however is some kind of shaved prosthetic gorilla with a personality disorder, the lady vampire... |

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) |

It is the year 1899 in an alternate Victorian Age world. Sean Connery plays Allan Quatermain, a renowned adventurer who lived many perilous adventures. He is hired by a Mr. M to rid the world of a certain "The Fantom" who has better weapons than anyone and wants to start a World War so that he can supply countries with his weapons. The stoic Quatermain must lead a league composed of many different characters, each with a unique power (hence the title). This "League" comprises of Stuart Townsend as the smothering Dorian Gray (who is immortal), Mina Harker (a vampiress whose ability to morph into a flock of vampire bats was impressive as well), American secret service agent Tom Sawyer (who is good with guns), Rodney Skinner (The Invisible Man), Captain Nemo with his amazing transportation ca... |
