Combining the "Star Wars" universe with taught espionage, "Rogue One" is an interesting addition to the franchise, but is admittedly talk-heavy and feels rather unnecessary.

The first of a planned anthology series stands on its own and is a great addition to the Star Wars saga. The movie takes place between Revenge of the Sith (2005) and A New Hope, (1977) its events bring audiences full circle to the place where Star Wars began almost 40 years ago. Rogue One is a beautifully shot, wonderfully acted movie. It has plenty of Easter eggs and callbacks, but they don't obnoxiously draw attention to themselves. The set pieces are top notch and the last act is filled with edge of your seat thrills and has its big emotional ending. This movie continues the resurgence of the Star Wars franchise and sets the bar very high for the upcoming movies.

I didn't love a lot of the Star Wars callbacks and felt that the new characters were a bit flat, but I did really enjoy the atmosphere and cinematography. Edwards really does a nice job of creating a good battle scene with scale, and Jyn Erso is the nicest of the new additions. Great practical effects and war tactility, but it was often hindered by the need to adhere to the Star Wars formula (ie. comic-relief droid, random throw-ins of old characters, CGI-ing the classic actors unnecessarily, and the Darth Vader inclusion). All in all, a solid blockbuster. Attrubution: https://soundcloud.com/mattflynn410/rogue-one-a-star-wars-story-spoiler-discussion

Rogue One: A Success Story. Good job Disney!

Audiences returned to Star Wars with Abrams' entertaining if unoriginal The Force Awakens. Gareth Edwards reminds audiences why we love Star Wars in the first place with his dark and exciting installment ROGUE ONE.

The film presents us with the Rebel Alliance in full swing against the insidious Galactic Empire which is rumored to be building a doomsday weapon, described in whispers as a planet killer. They plan to contact or preferably kill the machine's creator by hiring his daughter Jyn Erso to track him down. Jyn Erso (Jones) is outfitted with a motley crew of killers, spies, saboteurs, and one very snarky but badass droid (Tudyk). They are met with resistance from skeptical rebels, persistent storm-troopers, Imperial assassins, and Darth Vader himself!

ROGUE ONE is not just a …

Putting the War in Star Wars

With The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams delivered a huge batch of nostalgia while reeling in a new generation of Star Wars Fans. Disney's plan going forward was to deliver a new Star Wars films each year - one part of the new trilogy and the other a stand-alone film set within the Star Wars universe and timeline. Rogue One is the first of those stand-alone films and it more than holds its own as it channels the sense of adventure and wonder while delivering an emotional punch that leans a bit darker and more action-oriented than the previous films.

Rogue One is essentially the story of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) who, as the movie opens, is just a child and has to watch as her father, Galen (Mads Mikkelsen in an all-too-brief role) is forcibly taken by the Empire in a group led by Orson …

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Movie Review

Matthew Brady - wrote on 12/17/2016

Dark Vader: "Be careful not to choke on your aspirations, Director."

Rogue One follows Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones) a Rebellion soldier and criminal, who is about to experience her biggest challenge yet when Mon Mothma sets her out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. With help from the Rebels, a master swordsman, and non-allied forces, Jyn will be in for something bigger than she thinks.

I had my worries with Rogue One, if I must admit. After the massive success of "The Force Awakens", the universe of Star Wars has now expanded even more. There's going to be more sequels, prequels, and spin-offs every year now. Why this worries me is because I fear I'm going to be sick of theses and not really get exited anymore. Star Wars should be treated like a three year …

I love the direction this film is going - the new trailer / behind the scenes footage really makes this stand out as putting the War in Star Wars. While I enjoy the fantasy and sci-fi aspects as much as anyone, giving the film a bit of an edge is OK with me.

Official synopsis and teaser reveled at the Star Wars Celebration. Apparently Rogue One will follow the rebel resistance as they steal the plans for the first Death Star. Still early as Felicity Jones is still the only certified cast member - but we'll see if expanded universe figure Kyla Katarn makes an appearance (probably not - but who knows).

The first Star Wars spinoff film has been announced with a release date of Dec. 16, 2016. Not much is known at this point other than Gareth Edwards (Monsters, the recent Godzilla reboot) is directing and that Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) has been cast.It will also be the first film in the Star Wars canon not to be scored by John Williams, as Alexandre Desplat (who just won an Academy Award for his score in The Grand Budapest Hotel) will be composing the music. While I will …
