Tom Cruise vehicle (eh eh?) that just recycles the same formula used in 'TOP GUN'. Except they forgot that car racing is much less exciting that flying jet fighters. Sorry, NASCAR Fans. Competently made but the story is full of cliches.

Tom Cruise as a race car driver just doesn't work as well as Tom Cruise fighter pilot or Tom Cruise bartender. There's nothing inherently wrong with this film, it just doesn't have as much impact as it should.

Tony Scott does for racecars what he did for jet fighters in Top Gun. Unfortunately, like that other film, there's still a fair amount of weepy dramatic scenes that come across as melodramatic (Scott's forte is clearly directing action.)
