Tom Cruise as a race car driver just doesn't work as well as Tom Cruise fighter pilot or Tom Cruise bartender. There's nothing inherently wrong with this film, it just doesn't have as much impact as it should.

Tony Scott does for racecars what he did for jet fighters in Top Gun. Unfortunately, like that other film, there's still a fair amount of weepy dramatic scenes that come across as melodramatic (Scott's forte is clearly directing action.)

This was a pretty good movie. Though, I think it could've been better.
