There are some excellent character moments here, pulled out of the societal norms of the period. I sometimes feel, however, that these better moments from Scorsese, get lost in the scope of the film, which has the tendency to drag with its long running time.

I think this movie is one of my favorites because 1.) It's a period piece, set in the early 1900's. The costumes and settings are so beautiful. 2.) The three lead actors. 3.) Martin Scorese's directing. I love the restraint in the 3 main characters. Even though Newland loves Ellen, he marries May because at that time NY high society people did what was proper. In Newland's case, he does the right thing, but feels trapped his whole life. In the end, he realizes what was really relevant and comes to terms with his decisions.

This is a really old-fashioned, formal movie, about a guy who marries a young woman, all the while being in love with her cousin. This movie wasn't bad or anything, it's just not my type of movie. It didn't really interest me in the slightest, as nothing very interesting happened in the movie. And, the end left you wondering - what has been resolved? The answer is nothing. So, in my opinion, the movie is pretty pointless. Oh, and even though Winona Ryder was in this movie (who I love) she couldn't even improve the movie.
