Although the plot twists and turns are obvious and sometimes silly, this classic horror film does pioneer a sort of atmosphere of dread. The macabre set design adds to the excellent (for its time) makeup job. Some of the actors are wooden (the gypsies - probably non-professional actors - are horrible,) but Claude Rains and Lon Chaney Jr. (in human form) are believable and their scenes together, as father and son, are the film's best.

The few good things about this movie are Claude Rains and Bela Lugosi. Without them this movie wouldn't be very good.

Rating of

A solid horror film from the 1940's that gets by with a lot of atmosphere, strong direction and committed performances by Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, Ralph Bellamy and Maria Ouspenskaya. I revisited this classic recently and found it just wasn't as strong or memorable as I had earlier thought, but it's a certainly respectable chiller of its day. Final Grade: B
