Writer/Director Wilder takes his terrific noir sensibilities from 'Double Indemnity' and places them in a story about journalism. Kirk Douglas awesomely plays a callous newspaper writer looking to exploit a situation for his own selfish career boost. The film is drenched in a cynical atmosphere that pays off as coldly as you would expect. A good story made all the better with angry statements about the circus of media brought on by unsavory journalism.

An under-appreciated gem from Billy Wilder & Kirk Douglas. The semi-serious, documentarian tone the film adopts in its exploration of a media frenzy that spirals out of control only adds to the satire of the film. It does raise interesting questions of truth, particularly in the media. Way before its time.

Wow, criminally underrated Wilder masterpiece. Deserves every bit the acclaim of a "Sunset Blvd" and others.

Underrated masterpiece. Saw it in the theater. No, not back in 1951, back in 2005.

"Ace In The Hole" by Yojimbo

A fast-talking, unscrupulous newspaper man breezes into small town America looking for his big break and when he happens upon a man trapped by a tunnel collapse, he deliberately spins out the story for his own selfish ends. Ace In The Hole is Billy Wilder at his most despairing of human nature. The theme of the story is how human tragedy can be reduced to the level of entertainment for the masses hungry for a sensational story and how this hunger is sated by the selfish and cynical; themes obviously echoed in recent films such as Gone Girl, Nightcrawler and Gone Baby Gone. Aside from the victim and his hapless parents, literally everyone in the story has their own agenda and the result is literally a carnival of greed as everyone tries to get in on the action with little regard for the co...
