I love science fiction. I love fantasy. I love space , adventure, war, and robots movie. I enjoyed it, but... I still don't like starship troopers. Why? I don't know, maybe because the sequel was so bad. |

Not that I'm the biggest fan of Verhoeven, but I really love Robocop and Total recall. This movie, though, sucks. And don't start the "it's a parody" thing. Because it sucks on every genre. Is not funny and also stupidily disgusting. |

This is one of those films that's easy to dismiss, but if you look under all those special effects, there's actually an engaging story. Is there a message underneath all those bug guts? Survey says - yes. And they still have fun with it. |

"The only good bug, is a dead bug!!" |

This is without a doubt, the greatest B-Movie of all time. You have the unlikely (yet obvious) hero (Van Dien), a damsel who ends up in distress (Richards), a minor foil to the hero and the damsel's inevitable love on both ends (Muldoon pursuing Richards and Meyer pursuing Van Dien), the king of all B-Movies (no, not Eric Roberts, Michael Ironside rookies!), and bugs that aim to kill all humans, and the stage is set for an intergalactic battle. And to top it all off, it's a parody wrapped in a political message.

Almost, but not quite perfect |
|
"Arachnids" and humans are at war, and "Johnny Rico" (Casper Vab Dein) has decided to join the military to fight the "bugs." Even though his parents, especially his father (Christopher Curry), object it and order him to go on vacation. He refuses, and joins the military.
He joins his beautiful girlfriend (Denise Richards), in military training. However, after taking an exam, he is assigned to Mobile Infantry, while she is assigned to Flight School. He is also joined by his best friend (Neil Patrick Harris, and his female football team mate, "Dizzy" (Dina Meyers), who tries to make him forget "Carmen" (Richards).
Now, after not being the best soldier-in-training and making a huge mistake resulting in the death of a fellow soldier, "Rico" decides to stick with the service as things ... |

Starship Troopers |

Even though it's too light for a science fiction film, I liked it a lot. The political messages here are obvious but they ring true, especially in today's world. There were some extraordinary special effects here for a film that was released in 1997. What dragged this film down is its first hour: the high school drama and romance didn't work for me. I know that the filmmakers were trying to establish the characters' innocence (or naivete, depending on how you see things) but an hour of it is a little too much. The film's last hour is amazing and it did keep my attention. I also liked the little interruptions such as the "if interested, continue" bit. It made me chuckle at times because of how ridiculous it is. If you like blood and guts, without edginess and darkness, this is the movie fo... |
