Despite some interesting concepts and fearsome villains (the bug aliens are thoroughly nasty), this film feels exploitive at times (yes, shower scene, I'm talking about you), and cheesy at others. It has the framework for a special sci-fi film, but probably needed a better director (Verhoeven is hit and miss, at best.) |

Another solid sci-fi action movie from Paul Verhoeven. A war film in space... with giant bugs! Great SFX and lots of fun. |

Anyone who liked this movie obviously has not read Heinlein's novel, or enjoys trite and completely non-engaging film making that shamefully takes the "Starship Troopers" moniker. Heinlein would be ashamed at this interpretation of his book, which seemed to try to poke fun at the military sci-fi genre rather than advancing a rational viewpoint through fiction. The plot effectively was made up instead of adapted from the book, and there basically was no ending to the storyline. The acting flat out sucked and the script was cheesy, not satirical in any way. Don't let artsy critics connive you into watching this, read the novel instead. |

"Starship Troopers" by Yojimbo |
|
A group of friends join up to fight for the Federation against an alien insect race. Starship Troopers is classic comedy. Unfortunately, the sly wit Verhoeven employs in this veiled parody of US militarism passed by unnoticed to the majority and it is pretty obvious that even the catalogue model cast weren't even let in on the joke; they earnestly go through all the cliches of college love triangle, military bootcamp (hilariously overseen by Clancy "MEDIC!" Brown) and on to B-Movie style interplanetary war with totally straight faces. Which makes it even funnier! The constant gore is laid on so thick that by the end it's just Itchy & Scratchy silly (my favourites are the flying bug decapitations!) and by the end you're feeling sorry for the bugs suffering at the hands of a Gestapo trenchc... |

Starship Troopers review |
|
John "Johnny" Rico (Casper Van Dien}, his girlfriend Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards) and best friend Carl Jenkins (Neil Patrick Harris) attend high school in Buenos Aires. Fellow student Dizzy Flores (Dina Meyer) is in love with Rico. Carl, having psychic powers, is assigned Military Intelligence for scientific research on the Bugs. Sergeant Zim (Clancy Brown) is in charge of the Mobile Infantry training.
The dark comedy scenes were hilarious but the dull screenplay and lack of a better character build-up just ruins the film. Some good lines from the film: Jean Rasczak – “Figuring things out for yourself is practically the only freedom anyone really has nowadays. Use that freedom.” “Never pass up a good thing.” It was preposterous in some ways when it comes to how cheap human l... |

Almost, but not quite perfect |
|
"Arachnids" and humans are at war, and "Johnny Rico" (Casper Vab Dein) has decided to join the military to fight the "bugs." Even though his parents, especially his father (Christopher Curry), object it and order him to go on vacation. He refuses, and joins the military.
He joins his beautiful girlfriend (Denise Richards), in military training. However, after taking an exam, he is assigned to Mobile Infantry, while she is assigned to Flight School. He is also joined by his best friend (Neil Patrick Harris, and his female football team mate, "Dizzy" (Dina Meyers), who tries to make him forget "Carmen" (Richards).
Now, after not being the best soldier-in-training and making a huge mistake resulting in the death of a fellow soldier, "Rico" decides to stick with the service as things ... |
