The Super Bowl Trailers: What Was Hot, What Was Not

Like many of the 108.4 million viewers who tuned in to watch the Ravens and 49ers in Superbowl XLVII, I was probably just as interested in the game as I was in the commercials. But there weren't just your average funny, heart-warming, disgusting commercials to contend with, no, some big Hollywood debuts also dropped. At $4 million a shot, which movies made an impact on me and which left me cold?

THE BEST:

1) Fast & Furious 6

After suffering a series of what I like to call "sucky" movies in the series, I was actually quite impressed by the Fast & Furious, which was like Oceans 11 combined with awesome cars and The Rock looking bigger and badder than ever. That's why this trailer make my night - it had everything I love about this franchise: wicked cars, characters old and new (or at least back from the dead - hello Michelle Rodriguez) and completely over-the-top action scenes (a tank chase? a car speeding out of an exploding plane? YES PLEASE!). This is pure escapism at its best, and Fast 6 looks like it's going to be an action fan's dream come true.

2) Star Trek Into Darkness

Even though I still have no idea what villain Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be playing (though he didn't look much like a Klingon in the preview) the clip left me wanting more. Plenty of action, desperation and drama - those who thought J.J. Abrams dropped the ball on the first film might just be swayed to watch this second installment after all.

3) Iron Man 3

Even though it was little more than a teaser - it was one heck of a teaser. Robert Downey Jr. is faced with a no-win situation - Air Force One is going down and everyone on board is free-falling. He may be able to fly but even Iron Man can't grab a dozen or so people. Much like other previews I've seen (his house exploding, things getting personal) it's going to be a rough time for one Tony Stark. It's almost reaching Dark Knight levels of darkness. Here's hoping the rest of the movie is just as exciting.

THE REST

4) Oz the Great and Powerful

I'm still interested in this film, if only because the lineup (James France, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz) looks fantastic. This trailer might have came up with a few new scenes, but it's pretty much in line with what I've already seen. The film does give me deja vu in that it reminds me quite a bit of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland film from 2010 - a lot of flash and CGI. I have a feeling this movie is going to fall in the style over substance category - but I'm still looking forward to it anyway.

5) World War Z

Now, you will be hard-pressed to find a bigger zombie fan than me. Zombie books, zombie games, zombie TV shows and, yes, zombie movies - I devour them all (not literally). But World War Z just looks... well, pretty generic. I have been paying attention to all the drama behind the scenes and I'm not afraid to say that I'm worried about how this is going to turn out. One thing is for certain - it's not looking very much like Max Brooks' most excellent novel. Still, despite everything (including the blah trailers) I will no doubt be watching this.

There were other trailers I didn't catch (Snitch and Lone Ranger - heck, I barely caught World War Z) but I've already seen enough of Snitch to know that if I want my fix of The Rock, I'll wait for Fast 6 or simply watch this awesome Got Milk commercial. As for Lone Ranger - that's still up in the air whether I will decide to watch it in theaters or not. Seeing everything about the trailer, I'm not sold yet, but Johnny Depp may win me over before the end.

What say you? Did any of the Super Bowl trailers sway you? Impress you? Make you roll your eyes?

Fast and Furious 6 looks insanely awesome. I'm pumped for Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness. Oz: The Great and Powerful looks fun, but I agree that it might fall under the category of style over substance. World War Z, never read the novel so I don't quite know what I should expect, but judging from the trailers - meh. The Lone Ranger, too, meh. And Snitch looks to be rent-worthy at best, in my opinion. My most anticipated of the year remains The Place Beyond the Pines, with Man of Steel and Mud coming very close.
