New in Theaters January 4: The Promised Land, Texas Chainsaw 3D

With the blockbusters out of the way, it's not entering into the more subdued time of the year. And by subdued, I mean the dumping grounds for less than stellar movies. In this case we have a horror film (a kind of reboot sequel) and some kind of political drama. I have a feeling that neither film is going to make much of an impact at the box office and that we're looking at a top five that may be switched around a bit, but still very familiar.

THE PROMISED LAND In any other year a film starring the likes of Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, Rosemarie DeWitt and John Krasinski - plus being directed by Gus Van Sant - would be receiving quite a bit more attention. However, Promised Land looks to be playing it much too safe. From what I can gather this is some kind of environmental political drama with a possible romance thrown in. This muddled marketing campaign is meant to draw in a more general audience, but by not focusing in on one main aspect, it's going to splinter that audience instead and probably suffer at the box office because of it. All on the fact this looks completely generic and rather bland, and I have a feeling this is rental at best.

TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D We've already seen a revival of this franchise once with the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the 2006 Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - neither of which I found particularly entertaining. This film serves a true sequel to the 1974 original - and while it's nice to see Bill Moseley and Gunnar Hansen again, I have a feeling this is going to be another run-of-the-mill horror film where a lot of pretty, young people are going to get killed in various ways. I would say unless you're a hardcore horror fan, this deserves a pass. It might serve as a way to pass the time on a rainy, boring day - but that's all.

I may be wrong - it has been known to happen - but I'm confidant that neither of these two films is going to have much of an impact on the box office. I'll return Sunday with all the details.
