Will Phillip Morris Ever Grace the Screen?

The oft-delayed Jim Carrey / Ewan McGregor vehicle, I Love You Phillip Morris, has been delayed again. With a feud brewing between distributor Consolidated and financial backers EuropaCorp, the United States may have to wait until October before Morris hits theaters, but may not want to hold their breath.

Friends over in Europe and Asia have already had a chance to see the film, as it has been pretty much released everywhere except the U.S. - at least not legally. Somehow from the description and reviews, this seems like a comedy / drama / crime film that echoes Brokeback Mountain and once again has Carrey stretching his dramatic chops, while still throwing in some comedy.

I'll be blunt: I won't see this film, at least not in theaters. If I caught it on cable? I might give it a shot. The year-long delay doesn't help sooth my feelings - though I think the subject matter shouldn't be to blame. Plus, I can't help but notice that Carrey's dramatic track record (or even his comedic one) hasn't been good as of late. In fact, aside from The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, I don't know what else I would recommend out of his career. Certainly not Yes Man or The Number 23.

The waiting game is ongoing. We'll just have to bite the bullet a bit longer in the states before we can see if this is the role that vindicates Carrey.
