New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Hugo Brings Back the Magic, Johnny English is Reborn

While there's not the largest variety to choose from this Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 - at least the quality more than makes up for the somewhat low numbers.

1) Fresh off some impressive Academy Awards - at least in the technical categories, Martin Scorsese's family friendly Hugo should enjoy a good post-Oscar bump in sales. I know it's one of the top movies on my list I haven't seen yet from last year (along with The Descendents, but I'll have to wait a bit longer for that one) and I'm interested to see if this movie can capture the sense of wonder that I've seen in the trailers.

2) A film that received a mixed reception here but did much better overseas, Rowan Atkinson brings his bumbling spy back into the fold with Johnny English Reborn. Most people know the British star from Mr. Bean (and his various movies) - his brought out Johnny English back in 2003 and received a modest return. Americans, however, weren't as keen this second time around, but if you enjoy British humor and something a little different from the generic teen and romance films that have hit recently, this would be a nice choice to shake things up.

3) A film that had just a brief run in theater, Dennis Quaid plays a local hero who is really kind of a psycho in Beneath the Darkness. A group of friends witness local mortician (and former football star) Ely, murder one of their own but, of course, can't get any adults to believe them so must hatch a plan to stop the killer on their own. A bit of Disturbia mixed with I Know What You Did Last Summer maybe? Sounds a bit generic to me - probably the reason it didn't have much of a presence in theaters.

On the Blu-Ray front you can enjoy the hilarity of the original Johnny English in high def before you jump on the sequel. Probably a good marketing move if nothing else. It's like the British version of Austin Powers - who is supposed to be British himself - did I just blow your mind, or what? Also being released is the John Grisham novel-turned-movie Runaway Jury. Despite having a decent cast, including Rachel Weisz, Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman and John Cusack, I always considered this a second-tier courtroom drama compared to, say, The Client or A Time to Kill. As far as thrills go you can do better, but you can also do far worse with your time. If you prefer your films to be a bit more classic, then join Spencer Tracy and Robert Wagner as they climb The Mountain. Two brothers on a mission - one to loot the bodies of recent plane crash, the other intent on rescuing any survivors - guess what? Conflict ensues. Filmed back in the day when the media wouldn't be all over a plane crash the minute after it happened (even on a remote mountain).
