An Ogre, a Persian Royal and a Well-Dressed Middle-Age Woman Walk Into a Bar

No sparks at the box office this memorial day. A weak (worst in nine years, slowest in 15 years) Memorial Day weekend didn't find any new-comers welcome.

While I enjoyed Prince of Persia, families still decided the final film of a green ogre was a better draw. Shrek Forever After led with $55.7 million - falling only 39% but still running behind the previous three films.

Meanwhile, desert settings suffered a major setback as both Prince of Persia and Sex and the City 2 battled for 2nd place at just under $38 million. Carrie and co. did get a head start and ended at $51.4 million thanks to an extra day. Looks like that $10 million wardrobe budget will get paid off... just so. A whopping 90% of the audience was female, meaning that hopefully people read my blog and took my advice to heart and didn't drag man unwilling males along this time.

The outlook isn't so good for a Prince of Persia franchise ala Pirates of the Caribbean. Although I thought it was outstanding for a movie based on a video game, it was still mostly a load of eye candy and short on story.

It's been a bit of let down this year, but I'm still holding out hope that Toy Story 3 and Inception will prove to be major movers this summer.
