New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Watch Out for Hobos & Assassins

Not surprisingly given that it's a holiday week, the pickings are a little on the short side this week. Still, provided you're in the mood for action, you might find something to whet your appetite.

1) It's been awhile since Rutger Hauer has graced the big screen in a lead role, but with Hobo with a Shotgun he's back on center stage as the most pissed-off hobo ever. If nothing else, I'm guessing this entertaining and probably really, really bloody. I'm still waiting for Nicolas Cage as Fu Manchu and a Thanksgiving-themed killer.

2) If you want some classic Samurai action, it doesn't get much better than 13 Assassins. When you put assassins and suicide mission in the same sentence, you know you're going to get some awesome fights. The story is apparently a take on Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai -- so it has some expectations to meet. Still, I have been craving this kind of action for awhile, so I will have to check it out.

On the Blu-Ray front, if you have about four or so hours to spare check out the claustrophobic submarine epic Das Boot. Granted, it's a lot to get through, but it's totally worth the effort. You can cut the tension with a knife in this one and it never lets up. Because you can't celebrate Independence Day without a good war film, might as well splurge and get the collector's edition of Gettysburg / Gods and Generals. Granted, these are a bit on the dry side for me, but if you like your war films historical and introspective it doesn't get any better.

Those are the highlights, but if you want a complete list of all the movies coming out this week, please visit the FilmCrave New DVD Releases and FilmCrave New Blu-Ray Releases pages today.
