Hollywood Video Shuttered for Good - What's Next?

The age of brick and mortar video stores edges closer to an end as Hollywood Video announced that all its locations will be closed - including all Movie Gallery stores.

I remember the days of local video stores, renting VHS tapes, mostly bad and or cheesy horror films, or the latest releases. Of course mom and pop stores were cut out of business by places like Hollywood Video and Blockbuster. Now with the rise of Netflix and Red Box, along with steaming online video, physical locations are going to the way of the Dodo.

I wouldn't give up my physical collection for anything, but the fact is I'm probably going to be in the minority in the near future. Digital copies seems to be the wave of the future or watching but not keeping movies. I think DVDs (and Blu-Ray) will eventually go the way of the VHS and CDs - there will be smaller and smaller selections at traditional stores until they're gone completely or relegated to a small area.

It won't happen tomorrow - but the inevitable march of technology and changing media means you don't have to own a copy of something to enjoy it.
