FROM THE BIG SCREEN:
Despite the fact that it's old, bloated, tired and barely treads water, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise still has its audience -- "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," the fifth in the series, took in $794 million worldwide. There are some fun moments, but for the most part its the same jokes and the same action -- someone or something wants Captain Jack Sparrow dead. Here he finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates, led by his old nemesis, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds himself in over his head once again in the top 2017 fantasy movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea ... including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas. Yawn. Stars Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Kevin R. McNally, Golshifteh Farahani, David Wenham and Stephen Graham. Extras for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales include a seven-part "Dead Men Tell More Tales: The Making of a New Adventure" featurette, bloopers, a photo diary and more. From Disney.

Also due this week: "A Ghost Story": Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost (Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Rooney Mara), only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. A critical success but ignored by audiences -- this is a mediation on love, loss and grief and not a scary story -- and moviegoers just couldn't make heads nor tails of it via the film's trailers. Worth a viewing. From Lionsgate ... and "The Book of Henry," a maudlin drama about a feisty, genius young boy's carefully crafted plan to rescue a young girl from the hands of her abusive stepfather. Stars Naomi Watts, Lee Pace, Jacob Tremblay, Maddie Ziegler, Sarah Silverman, Dean Norris, Tonya Pinkins, Jaeden Lieberher and Bobby Moynihan. From Universal.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:

Arrow Video/MVD Entertainment has restored one of the best comedies of all time, "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988). In 1988, John Cleese, former Python and the mastermind behind "Fawlty Towers," teamed up with the veteran Ealing Comedy director Charles Crichton ("The Lavender Hill Mob") to produce another classic of British comedy. Cleese photo for A Fish Called Wanda plays Archie Leach, a weak-willed barrister who finds himself embroiled with a quartet of ill-matched jewel thieves -- two American con artists played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline, Michael Palin's animal-loving hitman and London gangster Tom Georgeson -- when Georgeson is arrested. Only he and Palin know the whereabouts of the diamonds, prompting plenty of farce and in-fighting as well as some embarrassing nudity and the unfortunate demise of some innocent pooches. Nominated for three Academy Awards and winning one for Kline's outstanding supporting turn as the psychopathic Otto, "A Fish Called Wanda" has stood the test of time, earning its rightful place among its creators' remarkable comedy pedigree. New 4K restoration from the original negative, produced by Arrow Films exclusively for this Blu-ray release. (Originally scheduled for a Sept. 19 release and delayed until now) ... Sony Pictures Home Entertainment continues its Frank Capra Collection series with one of the acclaimed filmmaker’s masterworks: "Lost Horizon" (1937), celebrating its 80th photo for Lost Horizon Blu-Ray Debut anniversary by debuting on Blu-ray. Fully restored in 4K and presented in high definition, the Blu-ray is housed within a lavish, limited edition 24-page Digibook, complete with an all-new essay from film historian Jeremy Arnold and rare archival photos from the film. In addition, as part of the restoration, more than a minute of rarely-seen original footage from the film was found and included, making this the most complete cut of the film in existence. The film -- nominated for seven Oscars and winning two -- follows a disparate group of people who are rescued after a plane crash, and find shelter in the secluded land of Shangri-La -- but is it the miraculous utopia it appears to be? Stars Ronald Colman, Jane Wyatt, Edward Everett Horton, John Howard, Thomas Mitchell, Margo, Isabel Jewell, H.B. Warner and Sam Jaffe. In 2016, the film was selected for inclusion in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” ... With "Vampyr" (1932 -- Germany), Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer channeled his genius for creating mesmerizing atmosphere and austere, unsettling imagery into the horror genre. The result -- a chilling film about a student of the occult who encounters supernatural haunts and local evildoers in a village outside Paris -- is nearly unclassifiable. A host of stunning camera and editing tricks and densely layered sounds photo for Vampyr Blu-Ray Debut creates a mood of dreamlike terror. With its roiling fogs, ominous scythes, and foreboding echoes, "Vampyr" is one of cinema's greatest nightmares. On Blu-ray Disc, with high-definition digital transfer of the original German version of the film, from the 1998 restoration by Martin Koerber and the Cineteca di Bologna, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack. The Criterion Collection. Extras include an alternate version with English text; audio commentary featuring film scholar Tony Rayns; "Carl Th. Dreyer," a 1966 documentary by Jørgen Roos chronicling Dreyer's career; video essay by scholar Casper Tybjerg on Dreyer's influences in creating "Vampyr"; radio broadcast from 1958 of Dreyer reading an essay about filmmaking; a booklet featuring essays by critics Mark Le Fanu and Kim Newman, a piece by Koerber on the restoration, and a 1964 interview with producer and actor Nicolas de Gunzburg; and a book featuring Dreyer and Christen Jul's original screenplay and Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 story "Carmilla," a source for the film. Also from Arrow: "The Suspicious Death of a Minor" (1975 -- Italy) In the wake of the success of Dario Argento's ground-breaking giallo "The Bird With the Crystal Plumage," numerous other directors stepped forward to try their hand at these lurid murder-mysteries. At the forefront was Sergio Martino, whose sensual 70s thrillers starring Edwige Fenech and George Hilton are widely celebrated as some of the best the genre has to offer. The photo for The Suspicious Death of a Minor final of Martino's six gialli, "The Suspicious Death of a Minor," combines conventional giallo trappings with elements of the then flourishing "poliziotteschi" crime thrillers. Claudio Cassinelli stars as undercover cop Paolo Germi, on the trail of a Milanese criminal outfit following the brutal murder of an underage prostitute. But a killer-for-hire is also on the prowl, bumping off witnesses before they have a chance to talk. Also starring Mel Ferrer, Barbara Magnolfi and Jenny Tamburi, and featuring a script by veteran giallo writer Ernesto Gastaldi, this unique and lesser-known entry in Martino's filmography serves as an essential link between two different movements in Italian popular cinema. In a Blu-ray/DVD Combo ... and "Don't Torture a Duckling" (1972 -- Italy) From Lucio Fulci, the godfather of gore, comes one of the most powerful and unsettling giallo thrillers ever produced: his 1972 masterpiece "Don't Torture a Duckling." But before the mystery is solved, more blood will have been spilled, and not all of it belonging to innocents.
