FROM THE BIG SCREEN:
"John Wick: Chapter Two" is the sequel to the 2014 surprise hit about legendary hitman John Wick (Keanu Reeves) -- nicknamed "The Boogeyman" -- who comes out of retirement to avenge the death of his dog and the theft of his prize vintage mustang by a group of Russian mobsters. In this episode (we say episode because the ending leaves the way open for a second sequel), Wick's desire to retire is foiled by Santino D'Antonio, a member of The High Table, a secret international organization of gangsters and photo for John Wick: Chapter Two assassins, who holds a marker given to him by Wick; the marker is a blood oath that forces him to do D'Antonio's bidding. His mission -- to assassinate D'Antonio's sister, who is scheduled to be "coronated" as the new head of The High Table. Wick then travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers and, after dispatching dozens and dozens of assassins, he returns to New York, where he discovers that D'Antonio has placed a large bounty on his head, and he's forced to dodge and kill dozens and dozens more assassins. "John Wick: Chapter 2" pretty much picks up almost immediately after the first actioner, giving little time for Wick -- or audiences -- to take a breath before the slaughter begins. And it continues throughout the movie, non-stop -- to an almost numbing degree -- which, I suppose, is the reason de arte for the whole thing. Still, it's a thrillingly choreographed, immensely fun and watchable affair. But have a mop handy for the blood. Co-stars Ian McShane, Ruby Rose, Common, Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo, Claudia Gerini, Lance Reddick, Riccardo Scamarcio and Tobias Segal. Extras include commentary with Reeves and director Chad Stahelski as well as deleted scenes and a host of fun behind-the-scenes featurettes. From Lionsgate.

Also due this week: "The Lego Batman Movie", the follow-up to the highly successful big-screen "The LEGO Movie." Here the self-described "leading man" of that ensemble -- LEGO Batman -- stars in his own big-screen adventure where he has to fend off a host of super-villains who are let out of The Phantom Zone by The Joker. It's tongue-and-cheek family friendly LEGO action. Stars the voices of Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes, Jenny Slate, Héctor Elizondo, Mariah Carey, Eddie Izzard, Seth Green, Billy Dee Williams, Conan O'Brien, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Extras include five animated shorts, deleted scenes, six featurettes, and director and cast commentary. From Warner ... and "Table 19", a silly comedy about an ex-maid of honor (Anna Kendrick) who -- having been relieved of her duties after being unceremoniously dumped by the best man via text message -- decides to attend her oldest friend's wedding anyway and finds herself seated at the "random" table in the back of the ballroom with a disparate group of losers. Extras include deleted scenes and three featurettes. From Fox.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT:

Legendary director Nicholas Ray began his career with the lyrical film noir "They Live By Night" (1948), the first in a series of existential genre films overflowing with sympathy for America’s outcasts and underdogs. When the wide-eyed fugitive Bowie (Farley Criterion Collection Blu-Ray Cover for They Live By Night Granger), having broken out of prison with some bank robbers, meets the innocent Keechie (Cathy O’Donnell), each recognizes something in the other that no one else ever has. The young lovers envision a new, decent life together, but as they flee the cops and contend with Bowie’s fellow outlaws, who aren’t about to let him go straight, they realize there’s nowhere left to run. Ray brought an outsider’s sensibility honed in the theater to this debut, using revolutionary camera techniques and naturalistic performances to craft a profoundly romantic crime drama that paved the way for decades of lovers-on-the-run thrillers to come. On DVD, Blu-ray in a new 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray. From The Criterion Collection.

From IFC ... photo for Madhouse Helmed by legendary producer-director Ovidio Assonitis, the man behind such cult favorites as "The Visitor" and "Piranha II: The Spawning," "Madhouse" (1981) is a crimson-soaked tale of sibling rivalry taken to a terrifying and bloody extreme.
