New in Theaters December 04: Krampus

While Thanksgiving didn't provide us with any record-breaking fireworks, it was still a great weekend thanks to the combined might of The Hunger Games, Pixar and Creed. And I have a feeling that the sense of familiarity is going to be overwhelming. There is only one new wide release coming out, and because it's a Christmas-themed horror film, I have a sneaking suspicion the audience is going to be quite niche. So, I also suppose the box office prediction are going to be on the lower side (even if the movie does look entertaining in a b-movie horror kind of way).

KRAMPUS What happens when your dysfunctional family gets together for the holidays and they make you so mad you wish for the worst (and lost all that Christmas spirit?). Well, of course you summon the demon Krampus, who, instead of bringing cheer and presents, brings evil and death. While there have been other Christmas horror films in the past (Silent Night, Deadly Night, Rare Exports and more), I don't think there has been anything like Krampus yet. The biggest problem is that horror films play to a small crowd already, let alone a themed one - but being as this is December, maybe that theme will help out in some small part. I have a feeling it's going to do a lot better than Victor Frankenstein at least (it does look entertaining, I have to say). The cast also looks decent in Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner and Allison Tolman leading the charge. It also looks to lean a bit more on the dark comedic side of things rather than playing as a straight-up horror film - probably a good idea what with the demonic Gingerbread Men and stuffed toys in the previews I have seen. Still, I don't see Krampus having that much of an impact on the box office. The bigger story going into this weekend is how The Good Dinosaur and Creed are going to fare in their second weekend.

It may not be the most exciting of weekends, but we'll see where it ends up as we all look forward to Star Wars.
