New in Theaters April 10: The Longest Ride

One last ride - the tagline to Furious 7, should be one long ride - certainly longer than the only new wide release this weekend. In fact, I see Vin DIesel and his family pretty much dominating the rest of April - only slowing down once The Avengers sequel hits and subsequently dominates May. That being said, this week's entry does offer direct counter-programming to the male-drive action of Furious 7 and thus might have a chance of capturing the female audience instead, but I don't see it being any kind of major hit.

THE LONGEST RIDE Hollywood will never tire of adapting the work of Nicholas Sparks. While the track record isn't perfect, with films like The Notebook, Dear John and Safe Haven - he's pretty much a sure bet. Out of the nine films that have been adapted from his material, six have earned over $50 million, which is good enough to keep financing his brand. As to how it will do over the weekend - it all depends on if it can draw in a sizable female audience. The guys are still going to be all over fast cars and crying about Paul Walker (some of the girls will be too) - I guarantee not many are going to be interested in a love story about reminiscing lost love and star-crossed romance. Anyway - this success or lack thereof will be determined by who shows up - and if women don't show up, this ride is going to be short indeed.

I expect Furious 7 to once again dominate the weekend - though it will be interesting to see how short or fall the dropoff is from its record April opening. That being said - it should easily take the crown for the highest-grossing film of 2015 - The Longest Ride can only hope it can flourish a bit in its shadow.
