Every year while the best and brightest are celebrated by the likes of the Golden Globes, Oscars, Critics Choice Awards and many more prestigious awards, there is also the other end of the coin. The Razzie Awards celebrate the absolute bottom of the barrel - the "best" of the worst if you so choose. Past award "winners" include the likes of Battlefield Earth, Howard the Duck, Gigli, Leonard Part ...

There's not much excitement on the theatrical-to-DVD shelves this week; here's some brief rundowns on the major releases:
Has Tim Burton run out of ideas? You might think so with his latest, "Frankenweenie," a 3D stop-motion animated adventure that revisits the director's original 1984 short. It's a cheery, creepy tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved pooch...

Never underestimate the power of deprived horror fans. It turns out this demographic can only go for so long without getting a fix. The Collection dropped on Nov. 30th, Paranormal Activity 4 on Oct. 19 - so apparently horror fans have been biting their nails and pulling their hair out with anticipation ever since then.
1) TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D
Taking the top spot with $23 million, Texas...

There is no doubt that for me at least, 2012 is one of the strongest years for film that has come along in a long time. From big-budget blockbusters to dramatic Oscar contenders to indie hits - it seems that everything came together. While there are surely disappointments to be found, I would say that I've enjoyed far more movies this year than I would have through - and even some of the weaker e...

With the blockbusters out of the way, it's not entering into the more subdued time of the year. And by subdued, I mean the dumping grounds for less than stellar movies. In this case we have a horror film (a kind of reboot sequel) and some kind of political drama. I have a feeling that neither film is going to make much of an impact at the box office and that we're looking at a top five that may b...

As a fan of director David Cronenberg, I've been hard pressed to like his last two outings -- 2011's "A Dangerous Method" and his latest, "Cosmopolis," based on Don DeLillo's 2003 novel of the same name. Whereas Cronenberg's early films -- such as "They Came from Within" (1975), "Rabid" (1977), "Scanners" (1981), "Videodrome" (1983) and "The Fly" (1986) -- explored the interrelationship of...

Strictly speaking, it was a third straight winning weekend for the first entry in the new Middle Earth saga, but considering the Christmas holiday, it was really a winning week for two big films attracting two very different audiences, and it should stay that way in the coming weeks as well.
1) THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
Holding steady, dropping just 11%, The Hobbit managed to...

Well, it's nearly time to roll over into 2013, but before we do, let's reflect on the year. For one, the world didn't decide to up and end on the 21st, so we've got that going for us. I have to say that I think 2012 was one of the strong years for movies overall - certainly better than last year anyway. Usually this is where I would gladly give my own opinion on the top 10 movies of the year, but...

I'm a sucker for sci-fi tales -- especially mind-game-playing yarns as epitomized by the intellectually challenging works of Philip K. Dick, Algis Budrys, J.G. Ballard, Brian W. Aldiss, Frederik Pohl, Isaac Asimov and Clifford D. Simak. And ever since I read Robert A. Heinlein's time traveling epic "The Door Into Summer," which dealt with people traveling back and forth in time and the possibilit...

It was a big battle at the box office this weekend. Despite some heavy competition, no new release could claim the top spot. I'm guessing it will be a different story next week, but as for now, Middle Earth is still the top draw for audiences.
1) THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
It was another win for Peter Jackson - though the numbers have to be somewhat of a disappointment. Droppi...
