New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of March 31-April 6

Harley Lond - wrote on 03/31/15 at 04:08 AM CT

THIS WEEK'S THEATRICAL RELEASES:

Like many modern directors, Christopher Nolan started his career with one or two original, quirky films ("Following," "Memento"), was given a moderately-budgeted film with a couple of big name stars ("Insomnia"), then went on to direct one blockbuster after another (the Dark Knight trilogy, "Inception"). Fortunately for us -- and unlike some other recent …

Weekend Box Office: There's No Place Like Home; Get Hard Stands Tall in Second

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/29/15 at 11:44 PM CT

It took a one-two punch of a family-friendly animated offering and a not-at-all family-friendly R-rated comedy to lift the box office to an impressive level. And, as promised, the month opened soft like a lamb, but certainly went out much more like a lion. The combined efforts helped lift the box office about 10% above the same period as last year. With Furious 7 revving into theaters next week, …

New in Theaters March 27: Get Hard, Home, It Follows

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/26/15 at 07:39 AM CT

The theme of March this year has been girl power. Between Cinderella and Divergent, there hasn't been much room left for anyone else. In fact, other than those two films, there hasn't really been any big films for the month, really. We'll see if a comedic dream team can turn things around in that department. Otherwise, families will have another animated choice over the weekend if Cinderella …

New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of March 24-30

THIS WEEK'S THEATRICAL RELEASES:

At the risk of alienating Tolkien, Jolie and Sondheim fans, I have to say that this week's line-up of theatrical-releases-to-DVD hits a new high in boredom. I've previously weathered the barbs of Middle Earthlings by admitting that I can't stand the "Lord of the Rings" books and, hence, the Peter Jackson trilogy. Likewise, the "Hobbit" films do little for me. …

Weekend Box Office: Insurgent Easily on Top, Gunman Shoots Blanks

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/22/15 at 11:49 PM CT

As pretty much expected, Insurgent was the big winner at the box office - but the biggest surprise of all this year is how female-driven films have dominated the box office as of late while their testosterone-fueled counterparts have fallen flat. Sean Penn and The Gunman is the latest R-rated action flop to grace the screen in recent weeks. Don't worry guys - Furious 7 drops in a couple weeks …

New in Theaters March 20: Insurgent, The Gunman, Do You Believe?

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/19/15 at 07:40 AM CT

After Cinderella provided some incendiary results at the box office, March is in much better shape after the first lackluster weekend. Things look to follow a much more productive pattern as this weekend we get a sequel to a popular tween lit action franchise, another actor trying to flex his aging action muscles and, for those who are so inclined, a faith-based drama sure to stir the heart and …

New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of March 17-23

Harley Lond - wrote on 03/17/15 at 04:33 AM CT

THIS WEEK'S THEATRICAL RELEASES:

In the already risky business of Hollywood, a remake adds an additional level of uncertainty guaranteed to give studio executives plenty of ulcers. If that remake is a redo of a Hollywood musical, all bets are off -- which is why there are so few of that ilk. Remake "The Sound of Music"? Forget it. "Footloose" for a new generation? Why not. "Annie"? Well ... …

Weekend Box Office: Dreams Come True for Cinderella; Run All Night Breaks Down

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/15/15 at 09:54 PM CT

Say what you will about Disney's plan to milk its existing franchises by turning animated classics into new live-action versions - but if audiences continue to support it, I doubt it will be a formula Disney will ever turn down. Thanks to the huge weekend for Cinderella, the overall box office was up 16% compared to the same weekend as last year, turning around a downward trend from the last few …

New in Theaters March 13: Cinderella, Run All Night

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/12/15 at 07:47 AM CT

After a terrible start to the month, hopefully things will start looking up (and continue through to the end). So how do you reverse the downward spiral? Invoke the power of Disney - especially at a time when there hasn't been a new family film in theaters since SpongeBob dropped five weeks ago. Oh, and Liam Neeson is coming along for yet another ass-kicking outing that proves action has no age …

New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of March 10-16

Harley Lond - wrote on 03/10/15 at 04:53 AM CT

THIS WEEK'S THEATRICAL RELEASES:

The only major theatrical release coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week is "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," a second sequel to the very original comedy "Night at the Museun," here just notable for padding the checking accounts of Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Rebel Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Steve Coogan, Dan Stevens, Ben Kingsley, Dick Van Dyke and Mickey …

Weekend Box Office: Chappie Breaks Down in Slowest Weekend of the Year

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/08/15 at 11:32 PM CT

Well, March certainly came in like a lamb - which is totally fantastic for movies coming out at the end of the month as the old adage says the month with go out like a lion. But, as of right now, the first weekend of March is officially the slowest box office weekend of the year. Only one film performed above expectations, with one certified bomb and a second a major disappointment. But things …

New in Theaters March 06: Chappie, Unfinished Business, Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/05/15 at 07:39 AM CT

March - in like a lion, out like a lamb and vice versa. So how is the first weekend going to shape up? We're still in that time frame where blockbusters are the exception rather than the norm - but at least it looks like there are bigger things in store than the last few weekends. We have sci-fi auteur Neill Blomkamp's latest, a raunchy road trip comedy and a sequel to everyone's favorite …

New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of March 03-09

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/03/15 at 08:09 AM CT

With Harley Lond still a bit behind, I will take over partial duty on the new releases blog. The main movies will be covered while the Harley will provide the write-up for the rest of the films late this week. Thank you for understanding!

Once again, the Oscar nominees continue to make their presence known - expect to see one or two each week for the foreseeable future. Otherwise we have the …

Weekend Box Office: Focus On Top with Minor Victory

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/01/15 at 09:11 PM CT

It was a bit of a quiet weekend at the box office. Though some movies benefited from an Oscar bump, the top earners were off about 14% from the same time period last year - and no film could muster up a $20 million-plus total. That being said, things look brighter on the horizon and, overall, 2015 is up 8% compared to last year - and that gap should hopefully only widen as the year goes on. But …
