Well this was one of the strangest movies I’ve seen in a while. Part historical drama, part murder mystery, all saturated with atmosphere and dread. The climactic orgy scene could only been directed by a European;Americans are too prudish. Ben Whishaw is appropriately aloof as the talented but deeply troubled perfumer. Alan Rickman is very good as the devoted father turned amateur detective. I cannot say if this did the book any justice but it’s not lacking in ambition or sheer audacity.

A purely atmospheric film that is engaging mainly because of the strange premise and the way it balances almost satirical humor with elements of a thriller or mystery. I can't decide if the film is solely exploring fantasy or making some sort of social commentary (you'll know the scenes in question when you watch), but it is surely unforgettable.

A film that really pongs, rather like Brut - sweet and rather sickening. It might have been better had they not taken the preposterous story seriously and instead opted for a kind of House of Wax approach. A least there might have been a few laughs, though there are plenty of unintentional ones present here. What really sinks it is the international cast. French, English and American actors, plus a German director. Accents all over the show and with it any sense of the story being grounded. Dustin Hoffman playing an Italian runs around shouting 'basta, basta'. Enough, indeed.

this movie was very dark and had a lot of "what the F?" moments. Copious amounts of nudity, more so than I've ever seen in a main-stream film. Definetely worth watching.
