The plot, of course, is made of typical romantic comedy contrivances, but Roberts and Grant act their scenes together so sincerely that the warm feeling the film exudes is contagious. Rhys Ifans steals most of his scenes as the comic relief.

If not for Roberts and Grant, I probably wouldn't have found this tolerable.

I loved it the first time a few years ago, surprisingly disenchanted upon rewatching. Hugh Grant's doormat of a character keeps returning to a callous relationship. But it exposed me to Marc Chagall.

This is a sweet, romantic comedy. I love it, but my husband only tolerates it, so it's definitely a chick flick. Grant is adorable as the shy bookstore owner, William Thacker. Roberts played her character, Ann Scott, the world-famous movie star, a little too self-centered/mean for my taste (I got the feeling that she was just playing herself) -- she wasn't charming enough to make it completely alright that the lovable Thacker would fall in love with her. Thacker's roommate is hysterically eccentric and strange. And his group of friends are great. Love it.

Whether or not realistic, this is a wonderfully touching fairy tale like story of the romance between two people of unequal social and financial standing. The beautiful, rich, and famous American movie star is superbly captured by Julia Roberts. Hugh Grant is perfect as the shy, stammering, bumbling, unassuming, obscure, and not very affluent London bookseller, who shares a flat with his zany, weird roommate, Spike. For the most part the movie is decent, but my problem is that the movie is fairly predictable, and what really made me fall back a bit further from it was was the unrealistic ending that feels forced on the film makers to please executives that insist all movies end good based on testing.
