Mild mannered Howard Brackett has a perfect life: he’s got a wonderful job that he loves as an English Literature teacher; he's respected by everybody in his community and he's about to marry a beautiful woman Emily (Joan Cusack). But then something unfortunate happens to him. One of his ex-students Cameron (Matt Dillon), now a huge Hollywood star, wins a Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of a homosexual army soldier. During his speech on live TV, he tells to the whole world that Mr. Bracket was his big inspiration and that the man is gay perhaps because he is always neatly attired with his shirt tucked in and loves Barbara Streisand. Gay stereotypes are abound in this movie but it works somehow. I found myself laughing at more than half of the jokes because I realized that this is supposed to be a light-hearted, fluffy film. I also know that this was released in 1997 so I think it makes a powerful statement on how gay people are seen back then as opposed to now. When one really thinks about it, a lot of things have changed... yet a lot of things remained the same. The best character here that helped this film from sinking in its own narcissism is Joan Cusack's character. She was freakin' hilarious in this movie as a fiance who is about to marry a gay guy. My favourite line of hers (among many) is "Is everybody gay?! Is this 'The Twilight Zone'?!" Her delivery of that line is spot-on. Thinking about it now makes me …

An out-and-out comedy.
A midwestern teacher questions his sexuality after a former student makes a comment about him at the Academy Awards.
a nice job, an attractive fiancé Emily (Joan Cusack) and respect from everyone.
Everything changes in one night when a former high school student of his, Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon), now a famous actor living in Hollywood, makes an acceptance speech after receiving an Academy Award for his portrayal of a homosexual army soldier and 'outs' Howard Brackett as his inspiration for his role.
The media circus immediately begins as Howard desperately tries keep his life from falling apart by protesting that he is not gay and that the whole thing with Cameron's speech is a simple misunderstanding.
