Düster

Zwei Dinge sind besonders aufregend an Kubo: einmal die frickelige Stop-Motion Arbeit, zum anderen das, was hier einem jungen Publikum zugemutet wird. Vom ersten Moment an, da wir Kubo kennenlernen, befindet er sich in ernster Gefahr. Der junge Japaner lernt, dass die Welt ein grausamer Ort ist, an dem niemandem getraut werden darf. Auch nicht der eigenen Familie. Das alles dargeboten mit einer schönen Prise galligen Humors. Das Skript verlangt dem Publikum einiges ab, was wiederum vom Team der Tricktechnik in malerischen Aufnahmen verpackt wird. Inspiriert von der japanischen Kunst (so die bewegten Faltblätter!) erleben wir hier die klassische Geschichte eines Helden. Ein Epos. Creative, Original Masterwork of Animation

'Kubo and the Two Strings' is Laika studio's most visually impressive film to date. Stop-motion animation is taken to new highs. The advancements in this realm of animation make 'Kubo' stand out as a masterwork of specific craft. Laika have really pushed the limits with this one. A gorgeous array of unique character and set designs call to mind the aesthetic of anime cinema. Elements of that genre are at play, but it's melded in a way which sees the film carve out it's own identity. It has universal appeal through the simple, yet very effective, fairy tale action/adventure story. A deft balance of comedy, tragedy, thrills, and wonderment are seamlessly integrated into a touching story of a young hero's journey.
