In Taiwan, wie auch im Nachbarland China ist es selbstverständlich für einen Regisseur, der zuvor im Arthaus Bereich gearbeitet hat, auch ein Martial Arts Opus zu drehen. Hsiao-Hsien Hou hat während der 80er so gut wie jeden Filmpreis, der auf dem Markt zu haben ist, gewonnen. Heute hat er sein Oeuvre um The Assassin erweitert.
