War der erste Teil bekloppt, witzig und satirisch, verspürt Teil 2 den Drang, zu analysieren und zu erklären. Alles erscheint mir in der Fortsetzung eine Spur zu literarisch. Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), wir erinnern uns, hat ihre Fähigkeit zum Orgasmus eingebüsst. Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) wird zudem als Jungfrau geoutet. Der zweite Nymphomaniac nimmt eine Wendung zum Ernsthaften. Von der Ironie und dem Witz des ersten Teils ist nichts übrig geblieben. Schlimmer noch: Der zweite Teil gibt sich asexuell! Das entzaubert nicht nur Seligmans bis dahin so wundervoll mystische Figur, es macht auch den Dialog zwischen Joe und Seligman uninteressant: Die Nymphomanin und ihr keuscher Zuhörer. As I stated in my 'Nymphomaniac: Volume 1' review, I'm viewing both parts as one complete whole. The second half of the story plays much the same as the first, in terms of all the positives I listed in the previous review. But, where Vol. 1 had it's dramatic ups and downs, Vol. 2 is all downs. Still very much thoughtful, but a bit more of an emotional ride. Things are taken to darker places and it seems our character is regressing in any attempts to better herself. Her habits are changing for worse and she has befriended bad people. There's not much more to say. I liked the second half of the story every bit as much. Many viewers have cried out at the depressing nature of the second part. I don't see how that is an issue, when you can obviously tell that's where the story was …

A big step down from Part 1, Nymphomaniac: Volume II still has the typical Lars von Trier strengths. This time far more bleak and unflinching, Gainsbourg continues to give another rawly emotional performance. Jamie Bell is also quite good as a a sado-masochist, which is portrayed in painful, brutal, unflinching, graphic detail. It's up there with the flogging of Christ in The Passion. For most of its running time, despite it's relentlessly downbeat material, Part II is fascinating and harrowing, and if you thought the first one was unsexy despite the graphic depictions of sexuality, well, Part II is even worse. . Skarsgard is also great, as Joe's confidant and seeming only true friend for once. Then comes the final minutes, and herein lies the biggest flaw. I don't know what …
