Guillermo del Toro is right when it came to Hollywood's portrayal of kids in movies with "children as happy, brainless creatures that spout one-liners." The same goes to the tired praise of "the accurate portrayal" of kids who swear and make crude banter, because "omg that's what kids totally do and say". However, what I feel is missing from a lot of these movies is just how vulnerable and how unsafe it is to be a child. Where the chances of experiencing trauma and being ignored lies in certainty. And I think del Toro captured that effectively.

A ghost story that brings the common supernatural horror movie tropes, but "The Devil's Backbone" also takes the time to develop a powerful story.

More a story about human companionship during the horrors of war than a straightforward horror or ghost story. Yes, there are ghosts, but they serve more as a backdrop for the human drama that director Del Toro explores than as the primary antagonists of the film. A haunting and beautiful film that is more touching than it is scary.

A different kind of ghost story - one that doesn't rely on cheap scares and actually makes you think. It's well-crafted and has an eerie vibe. Though I won't say I was ever really scared, I was always interested.

Not so much a horror, it is more a drama. The acting and story were both good but there was something missing. I wanted more thrills and less long, drawn-out scenes. Not as good as "What lies beneath", which shares a similar plot.
