'Sands of the Kalahari' is a gripping survival drama set in the scorching deserts of Southern Africa. Stuart Whitman makes a complex villain and the suspense is maintained well even if the plot sometimes is not. Questions are left unanswered such as what happened to the pet monkey one character often carried and why another one is carrying so many gold bars. Modern viewers will probably find Susannah York's character is frustratingly old-fashioned though as a damsel in distress. The cinematography is beautiful. Some of the desert scenery seem taken right out of a David Lean epic.
