This is a raw and involved look at love and lust through examining intersecting adult relationships. The cast is splendid - especially Natalie Portman, who gives a broken and vulnerable performance - and that elevates the material a lot. Occasionally, the film is messy and unfocused, but when its scenes work, they cut deep.

Is this a comdey or just an absurd script? Let's just say this film has the dubious honor of having several melodramatic and lol lines of dialogue ('he tastes like you, only sweeter', etc) be put into Fall Out Boy songs. Everyone gives impressive performances in terms of being in character, but that just means they seem ridiculous because these characters are laughable. It's not sexy and it's not emotionall wrenching, but it IS a hilarious drinking game.

This movie was brilliantly cast [except for Julia Roberts, because she is just awful]. Jude Law, Natalie Portman, and Clive Owen [ooo...doesn't he make you shiver when you think of this performance?] were incredible together, portraying modern people in a modern world searching for a way to get closer to each other, but making all the wrong decisions. A wonderful picture, though very VERY raw dialogue. Love it, Mike Nichols!

Oh wow, the only Mike Nichols movie worse than this one was Charlie Wilson's War. Julia Roberts was wooden, Clive Owen was great, but the actual character wasn't sympathetic, Natalie Portman played a stripper with all the cliches, and I am not often able to tolerate Jude Law.

A depressing movie that has very few laughs to get one through it. Portman is hot and Law and Owen do not disappoint. The pacing is a tad off, but if you like movies about relationship problems, this one is for you. Not a bad film.
