Set during the French Revolution, Robert Cummings and Arlene Dahl play former lovers caught up in the intrigue and espionage that was typical for the period. Apparently this was a low budget historical epic that plays out more like a film noir instead of a romantic adventure. It does have a love story and moments of derring do but it's more of a thriller than a swashbuckler. Still, it's quite fun to see Robert Cummings' resourceful protagonist talk or trick his way out of every sticky situation. The movie does look too staged and cheap at times though, especially for the 1940s.
