Alan Ladd plays a crafty advisor to a shady politician (Brian Donlevy) that now has to clear his boss' name in a murder case. Things are complicated by his growing affection for his boss' fiance (Veronica Lake). Just like in 'THIS GUN FOR HIRE' the pair have good chemistry together. William Bendix shows up as a violent thug that gives Ladd a good beating. In fact, Ladd gets beaten up quite a few times but his character is still pretty street-smart.
