A film about antisemitism with a very strong central performance by Alan Bates. The story starts very well as a Jewish man pretends he is not in an especially bigoted part of Russia. The film continues on well when he is falsely accused and arrested of ritually killing a young boy. The film than follows him in prison. The film starts very interesting and continues on so, but after awhile in prison the film's message becomes heavier and heavier handed. It eventually simply becomes a dull picture at the end, and is quite annoying since it was promising at the start.
