The Virgin Spring is one of Bergman's more linear and complete films, but one that is also steeped in thematic and visual cues. The film's rich layers of redemption and revenge will cause the viewer to ponder long after the film's conclusion. Bergman shoots in a very immediate tone and this brings a sort of banality and nihilistic sadness to the film's events, but the redemptive conclusion is a subtle tearjerker.

Despido por completo de concessões ao público "mainstream", austero em sua encenação, é das obras mais amargas e herméticas de Bergman, e não particularmente satisfatória.

My favorite Bergman-film. It's... it's so simple, yet so beautiful, striking, haunting, sad, devastating, powerful. It's perfect. Max von Sydow breaks my heart. Ang Lee said that this was his first contact with foreign art house, and it changed his view on film. He said that he was stuck in his seat afterwards, in shock. Pretty much like me.

I saw this right after ol' Bergie died. I think two days. I was planning on seeing it anyway, but Ingmar had to heighten the experience. Anyway, I thought the girl was a brat and that her parents were wrong for sending her so far when there could be bad things in the woods. The ending was not so spectacular, but I thought oh well, okay.

Bergman adapts an old swedish tale for screen and builds a terrible story. Terrible because is told in a very personal way. Bergman was a man always trying to pursuit goodness trough suffering and pain, and this movie is exactly that. Is how things are. How sometimes a perfect, beautiful inspiring girl (remove girl and add whatever you want) is destroyed for the greatest and most powerfull enemy of all: hate. This movie really depresses me, but, at the same time, I can't ignore the beauty of it. It's a movie that can't be ignored. It might be better than Seventh seal.
