I must say Albert Finney is just great. He fully understood the assignment to play to perfection an alcoholic hiding from the unhappiness and decay of life. It's the writing that doesn't equal him, telling a story as hollowed out as the world its drunken protagonist is desperately trying to escape.

Under the Volcano is one of those movies without much of a plot but rather just kind of goes places. It follows a alcoholic British consul in Mexico who meets different people and does different things. A film either works or it doesn't, it did not really work for me. It had to much metaphorical things and the movie just trudges along until its extremely dark ending which lacked that much of a meaning for me. The acting is fine even though Finney goes slightly over the top sometimes, but the character study never became compelling to me.

A very interesting movie. Great performance by Jacqueline Bisset. I felt Albert Finney's performance was a little strange. I liked the theater scene with Mad Love with Peter Lorre.

Great lead performance that leads to some very powerful scenes.
