"Stranger Than Fiction" by Yojimbo

IRS auditor Harold Crick discovers that he is the leading character of a novel in progress written by an author who is famous for killing off her heroes. I was quite taken with the idea behind this film; enough for me to get past the presence of Will Ferrell, an actor I detest. The beginning of the film lived up to my leap of faith, presenting what seemed to be a clever, literary story in the vein of Charlie Kaufman's work, complete with some nice Eternal Sunshine-style visual flourishes. Unfortunately it falters halfway through as the rather appealing Maggie Gyllenhaal's anti-establishment hippy baker falls into bed with the anally retentive-to-the-point-of-Assberger's Ferrell, a man she previously loathed and represents everything about modern society she hates. Strangely enough, I found Will Farrell more fascinating here than in his other films where he usually plays a dumb goofball. His character is mature but has his moments of absolute silliness, sentimental and sensitive, and best of all, we care about what would happen to him. Farrell’s performance is equalled by the supporting cast: Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Queen Latifah. All of them are intelligent characters that capture the essence of regular people in real life. I think this is the kind of movie that one would do better without questioning every logic. Yes, it’s imaginative and quirky (and some events that drive the story are impossible) but that’s part of the fun. It’s a surreal comedy and we just have to accept it for what it is. Comedians are brilliant when doing serious roles

There was this subtlety in Will Ferrell’s face that is I think the biggest factor in making his performance credible. Of course we all want to see his comedic prowess, but its refreshing to see comedians do serious roles. To my opinion great comedians such as Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler are in their greatest intensity in such films of this genre. Acting was brilliantly delivered by the lead character; even supporting cast did a superb job themselves. Even director Marc Foster did a nice futuristic touch to it. The ending as everyone expected, the main character should die but didn’t. So I guess everybody’s happy, we all get to see our hero get the girl in the end. By the way Maggie G has nice tats, kind of a wild child on the inside and a soft innocent angel that …
