The film starts with a healthy relationship between Secret Service Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) and President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart). First Lady Margaret Asher (Ashley Judd) passes away from a freak accident. Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), the Speaker of the House, will play a role once the White House is taken over by terrorists. Sounds like a great plot, however, unfortunately it is not worthy to be seen onscreen. As one of my fellow members mentioned, it just mimics Die Hard in certain aspects. This critic has observed it while watching the action-packed film. So many ludicrous and unrealistic moments filled with dark and oftentimes senseless violence. Fr a filmmaker such as Tarantino, most of his films needs it to tell the story or have good character build-up. For this picture, the usage of violence was just off-putting and senseless. For a heavily utilized special effects movie, it felt hokey. Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman felt like bystanders, and these are veteran and talented artists. Eckhart doesn't fit the role of President and Butler just not as charming enough to be in this lead role. Lack of better character development for the gruesome and insensitive antagonist was evident. The conclusion obviously predictable and it was unbelievable how the White House was easily infiltrated, not even giving the terrorists a fighting chance to have a hard time. Olmpus Has Fallen would be enjoyed by action junkies, for film lovers this would be somewhat disappointing.
