Freddy vs. Jason

Review - Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) didn't have the souls he needed in order to go in his usual killing spree, so he decided to resurrect Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger) to do his bidding. But when Jason keeps on killing, Freddy decides that it's time he took over in “Freddy vs. Jason.”

The pairing of Freddy and Jason is one that I honestly never would have seen coming. They just seem too different to be in the same movie together. However, the result ended up being more entertaining than anything in the Freddy's franchise, and (as far as I've seen) the same goes with Jason.

Before watching, you have to know that it's a movie made specifically for fans and does not try to get a wider audience. It's a straightforward slasher cross-over that exists to entertain. Even so, the story is actually pretty thrilling and the characters (at least the villains) are intriguing. Freddy is up to his usual tricks, while Jason is shown as a tortured soul, albeit one that tortures others in the process.

The rest of the characters are pretty cookie-cutter, which isn't very surprising. You're not there to watch them anyway; you're there to see them die. The only real problem with this movie is that it was made for the fans, because it does not appeal to people who aren't familiar with either series. Not to say it couldn't get them interested, but it's cheesy enough to turn them off as well. Luckily, I don't think many people would see this if they hadn't the others anyway.

“Freddy vs. Jason” is a fun thrill-ride of a movie that hits just the right spot for what it needs to be. If they had leaned closer to either series' way of doing things, it just wouldn't have worked.
