Review - Date Movie (2006)

In a parody of everything romantic, Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan) was a girl just looking for love, which she found in Grant Fockyerdoder (Adam Campbell). Now Julia is trying to make the relationship work and keep Grant away from his ex, Andy (Sophie Monk) in “Date Movie.”

Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, two of the writers from the menacing “Scary Movie,” went off on and decided to start making crappy parodies of their own. Now what we have to endure at least once each year is an hour and a half onslaught of unfunny reenactments from both good movies and movies that were bad to begin with. I can only think of two reasons they keep getting work, one of them being the fact that even though this and “Epic Movie” are universally known as two of the worst movies ever made, people still go to see these abominations in theaters. The other reason is because this one wasn’t actually 100% horrible.

Most of the jokes do not work here. They’re not even jokes, just references and, as I said before, reenactments. They went a lot further into this laziness in “Epic Movie” though, as some moments actually are justifiable parody, even if they’re not funny. The only times I actually chuckled during this movie were during completely original gags, which makes me both curious and worrisome. On one hand, this is a good sign that if Seltzer and Friedberg gave up parodies, they could actually make a decent flick. On the other hand, maybe I’m just going insane. Regardless, just because I found a couple moments amusing, I will never recommend this movie to anyone but my enemies.

“Date Movie” does to cinema what Juliet did to Romeo: They get together, cause an uproar, and everybody ends up dying in the end. I won’t be surprised if in the future Seltzer and Friedberg make a movie so bad that people start getting phone calls after watching it and dying a week later.
