Blue Velvet

A Visual Analysis

“She wore Blue Velvet”… with these inmortal lyrics and Bobby Vinton’s melody opens David Lynch’s 1986 neo-noir psychological thriller. The film follows Jeffrey (Kyle McLachlan) as he one day finds a severed human ear and takes it to the police, to the detective Williams (George Dickerson). The detective’s daughter, Sandy (Laura Dern) reaches out to Jeffrey and tells him details on the case, connecting it with a singer, Dorothy (Isabella Rossellini). Jeffrey and Sandy start surveiling Dorothy, which leads to Jeffrey witnessing from her closet how she is repeatedly abused by a mysterious and psychopathic man named Frank (Dennis Hopper). What follows is a dark and often bizarre thrill ride which stands among the director’s best works.
