Sadly, I feel like I'm one of the only film-cravers out here who cared little for this tale. High expectations and critically rave reviews set me to be excited for this hapless film, offering little more to me than two hours of wasted cinematic energy. The story is far too simple to be complex, which it tries exceedingly hard to do, and rarely escapes anywhere useful. The first hour of the film alone doesn't let us get to know any of the characters as who they really are, but only offers bad symbolism into their harsh nature. The atmosphere was not sufficient to carry the film's central conceit, and the direction did little more than offer the same formula over and over again (Ree goes someplace broken down, a woman meets her at the door, says something sharp, invites her in, she's turned down in a request in a strange cryptic way, she leaves disappointed). A chillingly awful movie that I can not in any great way recommend and can rightly justify being one of the worst films of 2010, which is at once overrated and at another should be finely discouraged.
