Cabaret

In here life is (not so) beautiful

Although Liza Minelli was in her prime this production does neither her or the fabulous Joel Grey justice. Severely rewriting the original broadway score and changing many subdetails of the plot did not improve the quality either. Having been in on stage productions of this show some of the decisions on how to stage the musical numbers also seems underwhelming. So much talent, so much waste. It's not a wonder when people think of the great musical movies that Cabaret isn't one of them. Of course, Hollywood also hates unhappy endings and so does the public, and Cabaret is definitely not a feel good storyline. After 33+years it is an interesting look back at the style of the time as far as what the makers of the movies thought would look good for a mid 1930's era film.
