Red Hook Summer

Amen!

At a point during this movie, I began to long for both a benediction, and the credits to float up, heavenward. I grew up in a Pentecostal church. I used to have to go to church on Monday (Purity Class), Tuesday (Bible Band), Wednesday (Adult Choir Rehearsal), Friday (Friday Night Service), Saturday (Sunshine Band Choir Rehearsal), and Sunday (9am Sunday School, 11am Sunday Service, 6pm Y.P.W.W, and 7pm Evening Service). So for most of this movie I felt like I was in a long, drawn out, church service-with all of the uncomfortable, psychologically confusing, fire and brimstone imagery, and soul stirring music (Notably Jonathan Batiste plays Da Organist T.K. Hazelton) I was accustomed to as a kid. Colman Domingo’s fiery performance as adult Blessing Rowe was no doubt a show stopper, literally halting Da Good Bishop Enoch Rouse’s (Clarke Peters) charlatan shenanigans, and figuratively making an unforgettable entrance. Superb climax!
