Effective Recreation of Cheese

'Kickboxer: Vengeance' is a remake of the Van Damme starring '89 original. 'Kickboxer' was a lower-budget fight film born out of a combination of it's specific time period and charisma/athletics of it's star. It holds a certain amount of entertaining cheese for it's abrasive, but appealing take on the 'training movie' formula. Surprisingly, the exact same can be said for this remake. It manages to update the material, telling essentially the same plot, while keeping in tact the exact same aesthetic that worked so well for the first. Honestly, this movie feels as if were made in that same time under the same conditions. I had a mildly fun experience watching this training montage/beat-em-up flick. It does exactly what it sets out to do and succeeds. You know, for something with attainable low aspirations. I can't give this film a high rating due to much incompetence in writing/performance, but I can recommend it to anyone who enjoys the types of films it emulates so well. If that sounds like fun, then sit back and enjoy a solid nostalgia trip with lots of impressive fighting. I highly doubt anyone who's really looking forward to this film would be disappointed.
