I have had a copy of this for a while now and due to so much to watch as of late i finally through this in and had a look. I have always had interest in this topic due to the fact that i just couldn't believe that a feud between two families...neighbors in fact could escalate so much that it actually made the daily papers. There is actually a scene in the film during a town hanging where one fella's lady asks why are they are there watching this? As to where her fella responds with "This is history my dear as he is one of the Hatfields" His wife responds with "What are the McCoys's and The Hatfield's famous for anyways? Another hanging stander by states "For killing each other!" Well that pretty much says it all as the feud between the two escalates into loads of bloodshed topped with revenge.

I guess director Kevin Reynolds stood close to the actual events as i really wanted to see more fighting out of main charector William Anderson 'Devil Anse' Hatfield (Kevin Costner who nailed it out of the park) no worries however there is alot of fighting goings on elsewhere in this film to suffice. A feud that pretty much started 'cause of a pig...Randolph McCoy (Another good performance by Bill Paxton) sees that one of his neighbors hog's has his families brand on it's ear (turns out the neighbor is actually a cousin to Devil Anse Hatfield. Later fighting it out in court (Apparently back in those days stealing a hog was punished with the same penalties as persay doing a bank robbery, as back then the economy really sucked) only to lose as the judge (Another Hatfield relative Judge Valentine 'Wall' Hatfield portrayed in this mini series by Powers Boothe) voted in the Hatfield favor enrages the senior McCoy pretty much starting the historic feud.

Great battles ensume as one the fictitous papers in the film exclaim "The start of the second civil war!!" I thought that this would persay be a tad on the boring side but i was presently surprised on how fast time flied...
